History of the Practice
Dr. Richard Tokuyama first opened our doors in the Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village area in 1975. The following year, his USC Dental School classmate, Dr. Jim Osaki joined him in practice and they began building a legacy of excellence in oral surgery care.
Our second office was opened in Simi Valley in 1981, shortly before Dr. Scott Bennion joined the practice. The group expanded further when Dr. Don Nikchevich, Dr. Tokuyama’s son-in-law, completed his oral and maxillofacial residency at USC in 1991, and then again 10 years later when Dr. Michael Newton joined the practice. The practice opened a state-of-the-art surgical outpatient surgical center and added Dr. Wayne Ozaki shortly thereafter.
Since then Dr.Osaki, Dr.Tokuyama and Dr. Bennion have retired, and three associates have joined the practice in recent years. Dr. Marine Sarkisian began in 2018, and her classmate from USC, Dr. Ara Mirzaians joined us in 2021. In 2022, our third office, located in Glendale was purchased, and Dr. Rob Lytle, who had been practicing there for nearly 20 years joined the practice.
Expertise and Credentials
Dr. Nikchevich, Dr. Newton and Dr. Mirzaians are Board Certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Dr. Ozaki is a Board Certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. We have well over 85 years of combined clinical experience in the dental and medical sciences.
We committed to the advancement of our specialty and we are members to many state and national dental and medical societies, the ADA, AMA, CDA, AAOMS (the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons) and CALAOMS (the California Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons).
Dr. Nikchevich is widely regarded by our profession as one of the premier implant surgeons in the country. He lectures to groups of colleagues nationwide, is involved in clinical trials, and the first oral surgeon in Southern California to use the Yomi robotic-assisted guided surgery system, he has been instrumental in the latest enhancements to the system. In addition to his vast surgical experience, he has run our monthly Conejo/Simi Valley Dental Implant Study Club for over 27 years, which is well attended by the best dentists in our area. Surgeons from across the country come to the surgical center to scrub in with Dr. Nikchevich to watch and learn the latest surgical techniques for implant reconstruction.
Experienced Surgical Team
Many of the people who work with us have been employed at our office for more than two decades, including our Director of Administration who has been with the practice for over 30 years. Our entire surgical team has had extensive training, including assisting with the delivery of in-office anesthesia. We have four, highly educated and experienced Implant Coordinators to facilitate your experience with us.
Dedicated Surgical Facilities
Our surgical facilities contain the finest operating rooms, the latest equipment, such as a cone-beam CT scanner, implant surgery robot and 3D scanning systems. We also implement the most effective sterilization techniques available, including air purification systems, infrared lights, and antimicrobial disinfectants to guard against Covid.
Anesthesia and Surgical Procedures
We offer many options for outpatient anesthesia, intravenous sedation and general anesthesia, as well as Exparel, a one-dose analgesic for pain management without opioids.
In addition to dental implant surgery and bone grafting we specialize in the surgical removal of wisdom teeth and other teeth that cannot be saved with other methods of treatment, as well as the removal and reconstruction of most oral pathology cases, cleft lip and palate revision, corrective jaw surgery, and facial trauma.
